Do not create a new profile for an email address that is used in an already existing profile.

Is there a reason that the name is used in the match process for creating profiles? An email address can’t be duplicated and used for another person – it is not possible. So it seems that the email address should be the only key that connects to an existing profile and duplicate profiles should not be made that have the same email address as an existing profile. I would rather have errors of people where the system identifies emails that are already being used in a profile but doesn’t think is a match. Then I can I work through those name situations rather than to have the system create a new profile every time the system thinks there is a new situation.
Also, if you are using the name to match, you should be looking at the middle name and nickname as part of the process. Many people often prefer to be addressed using their nickname (me for example) and not legal first name. So when they interact with us they will use the name preferred and not the legal name.
As things currently stand, with the system constantly creating duplicate profiles, we have a situation where I can’t keep up with merging/deleting duplicate profiles. This situation is causing it to seem like we have more people with valid emails than we actually have and, therefore, causing a problem with the contract pricing.

We have alumni who share the same email and they do have separate accounts in Almabase, so not allowing another record with the same email would not work for us.
However, I would love for the system to flag records with the same email as potential duplicates for review. And, we need to be able to merge accounts that are both registered or when one has had a previous merge.
I also agree with Carmen Muffler's idea for the "Is this you?... pop-up upon login attempt. Plus clearer distinction between signing up (new member) and signing in (existing account).

idea to solve this: when someone tries to log in and the system is not sure, if it's the same person as an already existing one. The system could ask first: Is this you? If so, choose yes. If not, please create a new profile.
I also feel like that the signing up (new member) and signing in (logging in in an already existing account) are too similar. Often members don't realize that they are creating a new profile instead of signing in in their account.

I am having this issue too!! SO many alumni have multiple profiles and it’s not telling me if they’re duplicates and won’t allow me to merge them.
